Keren @ 5 months

Keren still loves her fingers and definitely very comfortable being on the tummy, raising her head higher to look around. At about 4+ month, we witnessed her flipping from her tummy to her back but it was occasional and these days she simply doesn't do it and rather just lie down when she got too tired. She's not flipping yet though we see her rolling onto her sides.

She's holding her two little feet and playing around with them a lot more. Most times, she will be pulling off her socks. She enjoys sitting up. Guess there's more to look at with a different perspective when upright. We still need to support her as she can't sit on her own yet.

She's now very good with grabbing toys under the playmate, reaching out and getting her hands on what she wants. That means pulling anything within her reach. She can pass toys from one hand to the other and even reach for a toy nearby while on tummy to grab and chew on it.

Life had been real busy since school started so tracking her development closely and simulating further have been challenging. Nonetheless, watching her smile each day and making more babbles while she plays almost amaze me and brighten the day. Posting on the blog is definitely slow with so many other things to manage. Staying home with 3 kids is no joke but looking at them grow and talking about their school day and most importantly. seeing them smile and sticking to you simply means millions. Guess it's learning to work within our means and savor the moment while it lasts.

Abel turned 4 today! We brought a cake to celebrate his birthday with his classmates. Such a coincidence that his birthday is the same day as his sister's friend, Di'der.

Keren's first visit to the beach and her first sensation of sand! She wasn't at all squirmy about it!

The beautiful sunny day after days of rain. Guess what Keziah found in her dig for shells? The skeleton of a crab!

The kids had so much fun as it had been ages since we last got ourselves with sand! They were happily piling and splashing that even a stranger came to join them to play together.

The two have been spending much time drawing, especially after their holiday art programme. It really surprised mommy when one day Abel said that he will draw a train and it really did turn out like one. He was never into drawing.

Another. In fact he drew many more on which he added in smoke and weather but mommy just didn't manage to document it down.

The kids were given marker pens and he started to do join the dots and surprisingly the dots that he drew and joined did turn out to be something. Once it was a car which he cut out and gave mommy as present for the day and another was this. What do you think it look like? Daddy asked him and he said it was a camel!

Keziah is really into drawing animals of all kinds. In this month or so that we started having three home together, she has to learn to spend more independent time. These days she's into drawing and writing short sentences. Sometimes, she even takes a storybook that she likes and copies the story.

It's really heartwarming to be getting little notes from her every day or every other day. She's drawing for her sister too!

I love the family picture right down on the right hand corner. Guess which is Mommy? Carrying little Keren on her back, with Daddy and the other two.

More Happy Call Pan

Mommy is starting to experiment more with the Happy Call Pan under the inspiration of many who shared their recipes on Facebook. More recipes can be found from the new website set up by her friend with some others.

After that perfect silver fish omelette, it's now baked pasta…The kids love it just that next time, the cheese will be more browned.

Char Siew..simply delicious! Did some vegetables using the pan as well and it seemed to draw out the sweetness especially of the corn.

Ice Skating…a first for Abel

As usual for this Christmas Season, ice skating was here at Novena Square. Keziah was so excited to go for it after last year's experience but Abel was a little reluctant. After much persuasion from his sister, he agreed to join her.

Abel started a little apprehensive. Simply just holding on to the staff helping out the kids.

While Keziah was having a whale of a time on ice though she wasn't very good at single blade. She's still more comfortable with the double.

Eventually Abel caught the thrill of the experience and was all smiles.

They definitely wanted more just that we had no more passes for more. Next year again!

Yes, she's 4 months old and still a little 4.7 kg baby. However, she's very alert and active. Now she can reach to grasp the objects she's eyeing on very well. Keren's also biting her lips and playing peek-a-boo with blankie.

Mommy happen to come across these at Toy'rUs that are more guided for Abel where he doesn't need to literally count the spaces but simply follow the template. He was so enthusiastic doing them. It is certainly good at training a kid's concentration and pincer grip.

Holiday programs are great to occupy the kids. They have been bugging me to go to Little Artist for art lesson but I never agreed coz it was really far. Since it's the holiday and Ta Ta and Nei Nei were willing to send them, we had a go. Over two sessions, they made these with other pieces underway to be completed over another 4 more sessions.

Keziah attended 3 days of the program me and came home everyday with different items, ranging from Chinese calligraphy, flower arrangement,

Chinese painting with 墨,

to cookery, making chocolates and dumplings of which Mommy forgot to take a picture of. It was simply fun with all these activities that topped up the core word recognition and reciting of 弟子规。

Time sure flies. Keren is 3 months old. We brought her for her jab. She now weighs 4.23 kg, length 55 cm and head circumference 38.5 cm. Pd still felt her weight gain was low and recommended the following:
1) Add MCT (Middle Chain Triglyceride) oil to increase calories of milk 3x 1.5 ml
2) 2 formula feeds to supplement
3) Continue vitamins

None of which is easy to carry out. Oil is super oily, with fm Keren still merlions and vitamins isn't easy to feed even if it's 1 ml. Somehow we still try as best as we could.

Is really gaining/doubling birth wt at 3 months important? She took 3 months to gain 1 kg when most babies would have done so in 4-6 weeks.

Nonetheless, she's still the ever happy baby….Look at all her smiles and hear her laugh out loud...

Poo...none for 12 days

Yes, we were real puzzled why Keren didn't poo for that many days. We decided to call the doc to check on her. She is on breast milk most times aside from the few feeds of formula for nights (at most 3-4 times in all). So it cant be constipation. Who knows, she finally did it after her morning feed. It was a diaper full of soft poo. She must be trying to avoid the doc.

Abel's scissors skills has improved a great deal. He can manage the corners and curves so well that Mommy wondered how long it had been since she art sat down to do such craft with him.

He even decided to creatively use the scraps as decorations for him to print his name on. As he said,"This is bus no. 123456."

Staycation @ Conrad

We took the opportunity to have a staycation @ Conrad where the wedding dinner was held. It eased the rushing off after the dinner to get the exhausted kids home. After a good nice sleep (yes, the room was really comfortable with nice soft bed and pillows that for once, I didn't feel that I missed my bed), the kids were ready to swim.

After a nice breakfast, it was time for a dip. The hotel even provided the kids with their own bathrobes.

Pity there wasn't a kids' pool but nonetheless, the kids had fun. Abel waddled near the steps while Keziah did her laps.

In an effort to gain weight, we tried her on formula for last feed. We gave her Similac Neosure as recommended by PD. it is a higher calorie milk formula for premmies and low weight babies.We trialed with day feed a few days back and she was fine. However when we swapped to night, she merlioned the whole feed or more in her sleep 2 h after. For 2 nights we had to clean up the big mess. Sometimes she would throw up till as if she gagged. Prayfully she is well.

Next week is Daddy's birthday but it's going to be a busy weekend with Shu Shu's wedding. So we decided to give Daddy a surprise this week. While Daddy was at piano lesson with Abel, Mommy took Keziah to get a cake for him and this time, it's one that Keziah decorated on her own. It's the Icing Room. Keziah was looking forward to getting her hands on it and has been talking about it since a week ago when we chanced upon the shop while waiting for Daddy at Junction 8.

Keziah just loved the motif cake and she chose for herself a fish. The baker actually created the motif on the spot with chocolate melt.

There she gets herself busy with the little packs of colored icing.

But who gets the presents? The kids! Haha they chose these for themselves when we were window shopping at Bricks shop. Not surprising for Abel as he had always been a fan of Lego, typical of his builder's character. Guess it has brushed off on Keziah too. Let's see how they work on it.

8 Weeks…Nice and Snug

Mommy has been out and about with this pouch that nicely fit Keren in. Always so comfy and snug that it puts her to sleep. Today at 8 weeks old, she weighs 3.54 kg. Yes, we are progressing each week with a more steady gain of about 200 g though there's more catch up to do.

A leap in weight gain

We had been seeing the lactation consultation Sister Kang at Mt Alvernia and we must really thank her for her enthusiasm in helping Mommy to breastfeed Keren and giving advice on gaining weight. She called over the weekend to get us to weigh in again today. Surprisingly, Keren had a leap in weight, gaining a good 150g over the weekend to hit a weight of 3.435 kg. Hope she will continue with this gain and suckle better when latched.

At 7 weeks 3 days, Keren is spending more time on the playmat. She can be playing on her own sometimes for as long as 20 minutes. She now not just tracks objects, she is attempting to grab toys in front of her and kick them with her feet.

Keren had her weight check again today. There was gain but still not as satisfactory. Only 100 g since last week, clocking a weight of 3.29kg today. Nonetheless, she's as active and expressive. She never fails to respond to anyone talking to her, looking hard as if trying to recognize you.

Day 40 A review

Not much has changed in terms of weight gain. Keren's weighing now 3.045 kg, an increase of about 85 g from her last weighing of 2.960 kg after a week. This is still below the standard gain of about 150 - 250 g per week. Today we saw Sister Kang at Mt. Alvernia and the following recommendations were made:

1) Improve the latch

2) Top up more per feed - 60 ml instead of 30 ml

3) Try the supplementary nursing system to encourage Keren to suckle more instead of falling asleep.

Despite all these, a closer look at Keren, it seems that her eye lashes have grown and now long like her sister's. She also had her nails trimmed.

Mommy's students actually came in a throng to visit us once they finished their prelims. They were all so excited over Keren that they all crowded over the stroller when they arrived. These were a bunch of lovely kiddos that Mommy taught last year. Though Mommy didn't follow them up to second year, they constantly remembered her. It's such gratitude at heart that warms the heart of the teacher. Here's wishing all of you the very best for your A levels and yes, don't disappoint me!

Each day now we have some play time. Trying to get Keren to track an object and determine direction of sounds. Some basic black and white picture flash cards. Lots of singing and some exercises to get her going with her gross motor skills though some say such exercise help in brain training.

Mommy was expressing milk when Keren awoke. So she soothed her and left her on the sofa thinking she will hold for a while but in fact, she slept for another 45 min. How comfortable is our sofa.

Weight Gain Anxiety

Like her brother, she had been a relatively good baby, sleeping quite a bit though there were still many nights of deprived sleep with constant nursing. However, these babies are at risk of not gaining enough weight since they are so contented with sleep that milk really doesn't wake them up much. This is of course not helping Mommy to build up the milk supply as well.

As a result, there was weight gain issue again. More severe compared to her brother, Keren had not gained a single bit since her discharge weight. Not even her birth weight. Almost incredible to imagine as she still fed, pee and poo sufficiently, alert and bright eyed. One possible reason was that she was constantly falling asleep on the breast and not lasting long enough to suckle the hind milk that is full of fats to make her grow. A visit to the pediatrician as expected required us to remediate. Even the lactation consultant we were referred to was amazed.

Mommy had to work doubly hard at latching for direct feed, followed by expressing any remaining bits and feeding it back. So most time we have to be homebound, much to Mommy's dismay as she had wanted to be more mobile. Praying that she grows…and some how this really made Mommy a little depressed especially when she hears people around commenting: "Oh, she's so small!" A little post natal blues with thoughts of her stunt development but thank God that He reminds He is all sufficient.

Smurfing Good Time

Smurfs were really a thing of the past in Daddy's and Mommy's time which we enjoyed a great deal but the kids knew nothing of them. Since there was an opportunity to introduce them what we loved with "Paint a Smurf" @ Northpoint, Mommy jumped at the chance. Of course, it's Daddy's time too as Mommy stayed home with the little one.

The outcome after 30 minutes of painting. Though we didn't win any prize, the kids had their fun with acrylic paint and brought home with them the lovely pieces. In fact, another Mommy took a picture of our smurfs and posted on her blog.

Art Garden @ SAM

It's open day at the Singapore Art Museum. Daddy took the kids out to the Art Garden. This year the activities were fewer than last year but nonetheless the kids still enjoyed the few items.

Running trains are definitely Abel's favorite. Daddy managed to get them into the queue which was exceptional as it's a public holiday with free admission.

They had their hands on some clay to make 'kueh'.
